Second Half

Second Half

Meditations for the second half of life, what you still want, what you set down, and what gets handed back without ceremony.

The second half asks different questions. Less how do I get there, more what it was all in service of. Two things worth knowing: the brain keeps changing for as long as you practise, and the stories you tell about your life decide much of how it feels. These sessions make room to hear yours. Every session here is signed off by our BSc (Hons) & MSc Psychology team. Go deeper: Neuroplasticity: Why Your Brain Changes When You Practise.

Second Half

Meditations for the second half of life, what you still want, what you set down, and what gets handed back without ceremony.

40 sessions
A Different Hunger
19 min A Different Hunger A meditation for the second half of life, when familiar appetites lose their grip and a different hunger starts to make itself known.
Putting Down the Oars
20 min Putting Down the Oars A meditation for the second half of a working life, when the arms have been rowing longer than the mouth admits and the next stroke can no longer be found inside the muscle.
Still Holding This One
16 min Still Holding This One A slow, spacious meditation for the things you're still holding, the grief, the hope, the resentment, the love you cannot yet open your hands around.
What Gets Handed Back
22 min What Gets Handed Back A meditation on the quiet returns of the second half of life, the unhurried meal, the slower hand, the rest you no longer have to earn.
What You No Longer Carry
20 min What You No Longer Carry A quiet meditation for a life past its middle, when old worries begin to loosen their grip without ceremony.
Your Parents' Last Good Photograph
16 min Your Parents' Last Good Photograph A quiet sleep session built around a single photograph of your parents, the one from just before time began to take pieces back.
After the Title
18 min After the Title A quiet meditation on the title you wear when strangers ask what you do.
Apprenticeship Again
16 min Apprenticeship Again ## ARRIVAL There is a particular kind of clumsiness only an adult chooses, late in the day, with both eyes open. The clumsiness of taking up something new inside a life that has already learned its own shape.
Been Here Before
Been Here Before
Begin Again
14 min Begin Again ## ARRIVAL You picked it up again on a Sunday, the violin, the language, the new trade, knowing the knack would return in fragments. Fingers landed wrong; the muscle memory still answered to a life you had quietly walked out of.
Beginner Again
21 min Beginner Again There is a particular freedom in taking up the craft you have always half-meant to try, with no exam to pass and nothing to prove. Beginner Again loosens the old link between learning and achievement, making room for slow hands, crooked first attempts and simple interest. What once had to be mastered can now be enjoyed purely for the love of doing it.
Body That's Done Things
12 min Body That's Done Things ## ARRIVAL Tonight is for the body that has done things, not the one you check in the mirror, but the one underneath it. The body that lifted, walked, slept badly, healed without being asked, and showed up the next morning anyway. We will not be flattering it tonight, and we will not be apologising for it.

Carrying the Craft
15 min Carrying the Craft A quiet recognition of the competence that settles into the body over decades of work. By following one familiar gesture of the hand, the practice reveals the vast store of knowledge that operates without conscious instruction. Not nostalgia or a tally of achievements, but an honest honouring of the craft still alive and working in you.
Crossing the Threshold
24 min Crossing the Threshold ## ARRIVAL Every life holds a handful of real beginnings, and most of them arrived early, while your hands were still close to empty. A first home with the key still strange in your hand, a first morning of real work, a city where you knew no one.
Curiosity, Returned

Decisions You Made
16 min Decisions You Made The decisions behind you were made with smaller maps, in different rooms, under private weather you may now barely remember. Stand beside the person who chose, without scorn, applause or the unfair clarity of hindsight. Nothing needs excusing or resolving; each earlier self can simply be met as part of the life still unfolding.
Discipline of No
18 min Discipline of No A clean no needs neither a slammed door nor a paragraph of apology behind it. Past the middle of life, noticing the inherited, proving and obligated yes before it leaves the throat can make room for a more honest answer. Refusal stays small and contained, protecting the yeses you truly mean.
Friends Who Stayed
19 min Friends Who Stayed Some friendships have outlasted jobs, homes, distance and long silences. The friends who stayed carry versions of you that no newer friend can know, anchoring your past outside your own memory. Their presence reveals the quiet weight of being known across decades, and the thousand ordinary choices that kept you both there.

Handing It Forward
22 min Handing It Forward Some knowledge has been worked so deeply into you that it now feels effortless. Bring to mind one person walking a few years behind, and one clear thing worth passing on. The pleasure lies in a rare kind of giving: your hard-won experience can become useful in another pair of hands without leaving yours any emptier.

Hours You Have
16 min Hours You Have By the second half of life, an hour can stop feeling like something to chase and start carrying real weight. This reflection notices the hours spent in good faith on the wrong things, the ones repeatedly moved aside, and the quiet hours someone may be hoping you will choose. Time has not changed shape, but the way you hold the next hour might have.
Knowing What Matters
20 min Knowing What Matters With time, attention learns to tell what is truly large from what is merely close. This quiet reflection honours the discernment earned across decades: letting lighter things keep their proper weight, meeting real concerns without flinching, and spending your attention where the meaning actually sits.
Knowing Yourself
19 min Knowing Yourself You have spent a lifetime learning your own weather: what steadies you, what unsettles you, and what you genuinely need. There is ease in becoming familiar to yourself, not as a finished problem but as an old friend whose patterns you recognise. Self-knowledge becomes something practical and kind, a way of looking after the person who has been with you all along.
Less to Prove
26 min Less to Prove ## ARRIVAL Underneath almost everything you did, in the first half of your life, ran a small and particular effort. A quiet leaning-forward, into the meeting, the introduction, the finished work slid across a desk for inspection. Not the doing of the thing itself, but a second, fainter task running alongside it.
Long View
19 min Long View Somewhere past the middle of life, the scale against which decisions are weighed begins to lengthen. Set one live choice beside both the urgent demands of this week and the question of what it might feed ten years from now. No verdict is required, only the recognition that a longer lens is available.
Nothing Wasted
24 min Nothing Wasted The years behind you have not disappeared; they have settled into instinct, judgement and quiet skill. Even the hardest chapters have become part of the ground beneath you, more ballast than burden. A reflection on the rich, seasoned weight of experience, and what becomes possible when you recognise that nothing was wasted.
Passing It On
18 min Passing It On Someone younger asks a question, and the answer is ready before they have finished. Passing It On explores the quieter discipline of holding back: leaving enough space for another person to find their own way, make their own mistakes and ask the question beneath the question. A reflection on how experience can become trust rather than instruction.
Range
15 min Range ## ARRIVAL The first time it happens, you mistake the trouble for the shape of the world itself. The second time, you file it under a run of bad luck. The third time, something quieter begins to look back at you from inside it. That something is what this session sets out to meet, before we go any further.
Reading People Well
24 min Reading People Well Years of paying attention have made you fluent in the pauses, tones and small contradictions that reveal what people really mean. That hard-won discernment has quietly shaped the circle around you, loosening the wrong ties and keeping the right people close. Rest in the rare, two-way ease of reading someone clearly and being read just as accurately, without explanation, performance or doubt.
Room You Walk Into
20 min Room You Walk Into Somewhere along the way, walking into a room stopped feeling like an audition. The old scan for approval, rehearsed entrance and urge to rescue every pause have given way to a lower centre of gravity. You and the room can meet at the same patient speed, with a presence that no longer asks permission to be there.

Time That's Yours
17 min Time That's Yours An unclaimed afternoon can feel like a gap that needs filling, especially after years of accounting for every hour. Here, open time is reframed as room: something spacious, unhurried and owed to no one. The hours returned by a long working life are not leftovers, but a quiet, earned luxury, yours to shape, or to leave entirely unplanned.
Tools You've Sharpened
13 min Tools You've Sharpened Years of small corrections have honed a personal toolkit: the question you ask before deciding, the way you read a room, the framework that outlasted every fashion. These are not confidence, but steady instruments that keep working beneath your attention, even on tired or uncertain days.
What the Years Built
18 min What the Years Built A quiet reflection on the steadiness shaped by a lifetime of experience. Rest with the body’s weight and the slow rhythm of breath, recognising the dense, load-bearing centre that formed through every season, not worn down by the years, but made of them.
Wide Open
20 min Wide Open An open look at the chapter ahead: the experience, judgement and ease you have already earned, and the space now available for what genuinely interests you. Not empty, but open, room for curiosity, generosity and a quiet appetite for the life still waiting to be lived.
Worth Your Effort
12 min Worth Your Effort A quiet recalibration for the point in life when time no longer feels cheap. Consider the real cost and return of familiar meetings, favours and commitments, without needing to decide anything today. Leave with a steadier sense of where your effort is most worth spending.
